Conditions Screened For

Our NIPT screens for common genetic conditions caused by extra or missing chromosomes in the baby’s DNA. Medilife Homecare Clinic uses unique technology to distinguish between the mother’s and the baby’s DNA, making it the only NIPT test that screens for triploidy and has the highest accuracy in determining the baby’s gender (optional). Here are some of the conditions screened by NIPT:

Trisomies

Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome): Babies with Down syndrome have three copies of chromosome 21 and varying degrees of intellectual disability. Early intervention allows many individuals with Down syndrome to lead healthy and productive lives. Medical conditions like heart defects can affect their lifespan.

Trisomy 18 (Edwards Syndrome): Babies with trisomy 18 have three copies of chromosome 18 and severe intellectual disabilities and birth defects. Most pregnancies with trisomy 18 will miscarry. If born alive, most affected babies will pass away within the first few weeks of life.

Trisomy 13 (Patau Syndrome): Babies with trisomy 13 have three copies of chromosome 13 and severe intellectual disabilities. Most pregnancies with trisomy 13 will miscarry. If born alive, most affected babies will pass away within the first few weeks of life.

XY Chromosome Abnormalities

Monosomy X (Turner Syndrome): Babies with monosomy X are females with one X chromosome. Many pregnancies with monosomy X result in miscarriage. Those who are born may have heart defects, learning difficulties, and infertility.

Klinefelter Syndrome: Boys with Klinefelter syndrome have an extra X chromosome (XXY). This condition can be associated with learning difficulties and behavioral problems, and men with Klinefelter syndrome may be infertile.

Triple X Syndrome: Girls with Triple X syndrome have an extra X chromosome (XXX). They may be taller than average and experience learning difficulties or behavioral problems.

Jacob’s Syndrome: Boys with Jacob’s syndrome have an extra Y chromosome (XYY). Most do not have birth defects but may be taller than average and have increased risks for learning, speech, and behavioral problems.

Microdeletions

22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome: Also called DiGeorge syndrome or Velo-Cardio-Facial syndrome (VCFS), this is caused by a missing piece of chromosome number 22. It includes heart defects, immune system problems, and specific facial features.

Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS): Caused by a small piece of chromosome 15 missing or uniparental disomy, PWS includes low muscle tone, growth issues, rapid weight gain, and intellectual disability.

Angelman Syndrome: Caused by a small piece of chromosome 15 missing or uniparental disomy, Angelman syndrome includes severe intellectual disability, delayed milestones, seizures, and balance problems.

1p36 Deletion Syndrome: Also called Monosomy 1p36 syndrome, it is caused by a missing piece of chromosome 1. Features include intellectual disabilities, heart defects, weak muscle tone, seizures, behavioral problems, and hearing loss.

Cri-du-chat Syndrome: Caused by a missing piece of chromosome 5, it includes a characteristic cat-like cry, low birth weight, small head size, weak muscle tone, feeding and breathing problems, and moderate-to-severe intellectual disability.
